Agriculture is a fundamental mission of land-grant colleges like Virginia State University.
All land-grant institutions share the tripartite mission of teaching, research, and extension. The Department of Agriculture at VSU offers a comprehensive Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture.
AREAS OF FOCUS
- Agriculture Business and Economics
- Agricultural Education
- Animal Science
- Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary Medicine
- Aquatic Science, Environmental Science
- Plant and Soil Science
The Department has a history of graduating men and women who have become leaders in their fields of study. Our faculty work closely with research and extension faculty to offer our students experiential learning opportunities in their area of interest. These include experiential learning at VSU’s Randolph Farm, a 400+ acre facility near the main campus. Some of our students work part-time in the Agricultural Research Station laboratories and/or at Randolph Farm. Our students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities to make them more marketable for positions with USDA, other federal agencies, state agencies, municipalities, colleges and universities, private industry, and more. An entrepreneurship course is offered for those considering a start-up business.
We are fortunate to have a USDA Liaison on our campus, who mentors students to apply for internships, scholarships and other opportunities to move students towards rewarding careers with USDA. The faculty and the USDA Liaison encourage students to participate in professional organizations, professional meetings, and student-run groups to enable students to become the next generation of scientists and leaders. Together we train students for rewarding careers in agri-business, agricultural economics, the animal sciences, and the plant, soil and environmental sciences. We train students to solve problems related to sustainable food systems and other quality of life issues. We offer students a nurturing and personalized educational experience . . . “A place to grow.”
