Program Mission

The Virginia State University Dietetic Internship Program (VSU DI) provides supervised practice experiences to meet the 2012 Eligibility Requirements and Accreditation Council for Education Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). The program concentration is Research. The VSU DI is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of Academy in Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), 120 S. The mission of Virginia State University's Dietetic Internship Program is to prepare graduates to be proficient Dietitians who can effectively integrate the science and research of dietetics into practice and who are committed to applying these principles to individuals in our diverse and ever-changing global society.

GOAL 2: The program will prepare graduates to integrate evidence-based practice strategies into their nutrition care plan

Admittance into the VSU DI Program does not guarantee that a Verification Statement will be issued at program completion. The Verification Statement is the eligibility document that allows dietetic interns to apply to take the Registered Dietitian examination. To receive the Verification Statement at the end of the VSU DI, the intern must meet all program requirements.Each intern who successfully completes all VSU DI requirements is eligible to take the national examination to become a Registered Dietitian (RD). As entry-level practitioners, graduates of the VSU DI provide quality nutrition services to clients and show sensitivity and responsiveness to the community.

Program Requirements

The folowing components must be satisfactorily completed to receive the Verification Statement, which qualifies the dietetic Intern to take the Registration Examination:

  1. Score of 3 or better on all rotations and planned experiences.
  2. Score of 3, or 80%, or better on all class assignments.
  3. Score 80% or higher on the final examination.

Virginia State University and VSU DI Program History

Virginia State University was founded in 1882 as a land grant institution. The University is a co-educational institute that offers baccalaureate and graduate degrees. VSU is a historically black state university; faculty and student population is diverse and numerous ethnic groups are represented.

VSU DI is offered through the College of Agriculture in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. The VSU DI began accepting interns in 1994; the first class began January 1995. 

Program Description

VSU DI is planned for attainment of competencies defined in the 2012 Standards for Nutrition and Dietetic Internship Programs.

Candidates for this program must be self-directed, proactive, attentive, motivated, flexible, and responsible. Preparatory assignments, with firm due dates, will be mailed to students after acceptance into the program. Students must complete all assignments before beginning the VSU DI Program. Each VSU dietetic intern is required to attend the VSU 5-day orientation in August. Interns work 32 hours/week and complete the program in 43 weeks in June, excluding 2 weeks for vacation.

Following the orientation program, interns are assigned to supervised practice sites, where a qualified professional oversees and supervises intern activities. A qualified professional oversees and supervises intern activities. When requirements of a block of assignments (called a rotation) are successfully completed, the intern is advanced to the next rotation. Rotations include:

Minimum Admissions Standards

  • Baccalaureate degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college/university or a foreign degree equivalent to at least a U.S. baccalaureate degree. The degree must meet requirements as identified in the current Directory of Dietetic Programs of the American Dietetic Association.
  • A valid verification statement signed by the Program Director of an ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics.
  • A minimum cumulative grade point average from the baccalaureate degree of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Complete DICAS application
  • Evidence of dietetic-related work experiences.

All applications must be posted on the DICAS website by mid February for the program year desired.

Application Procedure and Program Costs

VSU DI Program follows the application deadlines outlined in DICAS. Applicants to VSU DI participate in computer matching and adhere to deadlines of the computer matching process. Use program code 448.

Applicants must submit an application to DICAS, along with a $50 non-refundable application fee to Virginia State University. Tuition for VSU DI program is $6500. Upon notification by the computer matching company of an appointment, students must follow VSU’s requirements for confirmation of acceptance. In order to reserve a position in the VSU DI, a $960 non-refundable tuition deposit must be mailed to VSU. Failure to follow this guideline will automatically forfeit student program placement at VSU.  

Each intern is responsible for the following estimated costs incurred during the program: 

  • Application fee (non-refundable)- $50
  • Internship fee- $6500
  • Books and supplies- $150- $250
  • Parking- $70
  • Lab coat/ uniforms- $50
  • AND student membership and professional meeting attendance- $250
  • Transportation- on your own
  • Rent- approximately $800/month
  • Meals- on your own
  • Background check - $20
  • Drug screen - $130
  • Graduation fee- $50

Financial Assistance

VSU DI do not qualify for financial assistance in the form of state, federal, local, or private loans.
